Applying for an Infant school place for 2017
If your child was born between 1 September 2012 and 31 August 2013 they will be eligible to start in a reception class in September 2016. Applications for children due to start infant, primary and junior schools in September 2017 will open November 2016. Further information will be available on the Derbyshire County Council site at that time.
Changing school at other times
You may want to apply for your child to change schools other than when they are due to start infant, junior or secondary education. This could be because of a change of address. You can do this online at any time of year and Derbyshire County Council have added guidance in the changing schools section to help you through the process.
If you live outside of Derbyshire you should apply through your home council even if you want to apply for a place at a Derbyshire school. You can find your home council through the Directgov website.
You have a legal right to express a preference for which school you want your child to go to. This isn’t the same as being able to choose.
However, there is no automatic right to a place at a particular school and it may not always be possible to offer a place at your preference.
You have the right to appeal where you’re unhappy with the offer made and this can be done online. See the information on the primary and junior appeals web pages see the link below.
At Somercotes Infant and Nursery School we endeavour to make the points of transition as smooth and as stress-free as possible for pupils, parents and staff.
We have very clear and well-planned induction procedures for children new to our school and we support the children well at the points of transition between year groups and as they move on to Junior school.
We place liaison with colleagues and with parents at the centre of the transition procedure.
Children automatically move from one year group to the next and parents are informed in July (with the end of year report) which class and which teacher they will be with during the next academic year.
After three years, in the year they are seven, children can transfer to one of the many local Junior Schools. Many of our children transfer to our local feeder Junior School, Somerlea Park Juniors. A separate application form is completed by all parents in Year Two to apply for their place – the school informs the parents when it is time and closely monitors the application process.
