Somercotes Infant & Nursery School

School Uniform

The children wear school uniform to give them a sense of belonging to the school community. The school uniform is the same for both boys and girls and is available through the School Office.

Please note the following:

  • The sale of uniform raises funds for the school through our supplier who give the school a percentage for every item purchased with the school logo.
  • Our uniform colours are navy blue and white
  • Items which have the school logo are only available from our supplier.
  • It is not compulsory to wear uniform items with a logo, although we do encourage this.

If you have difficulties with the cost of purchasing your child’s uniform, please come to the school office for confidential advice.

The day to day uniform consists of the following items

(Those marked with an asterisk have the school logo):

Top

  • White short sleeved polo shirt*
  • Navy blue Sweatshirt*
  • Navy blue Cardigan*
  • Navy blue Jumper

Trousers

  • Black / Charcoal Grey shorts
  • Black / Charcoal trousers

Dress/Skirt

  • Blue Check Print Dress
  • Black / Charcoal skirt
  • Black / Charcoal pinafore dress

The PE Kit consists of:

  • White short sleeved t-shirt*
  • Black shorts
  • Plimsolls

The PE Kit remains in school during term time in a PE bag and is taken home to be washed at the end of each half term. Please note tracksuits are not worn by the infant pupils for PE as lessons are held indoors if the weather is inclement. PE should only be kept in a draw string bag which should fit easily on your child’s coat peg.

PE Bags are available to purchase from the school office.

Nursery & Reception children require a change of underwear and socks in their PE bags.

Optional outdoor items:

  • Navy blue fleece*
  • Navy blue reversible waterproof jacket*
  • Sun hats*

As the children spend a lot of time outside, a suitable coat for outdoor play must be provided. Although we offer a fleece and a waterproof jacket, your child’s normal home coat will be fine as long as it is warm and ideally waterproof with a hood.

There are also sun hats with the school logo available from the school office for the summer. Although you are not required to purchase a sun hat with a logo, we strongly advise that all children have summer hats for when the sun is hot.

No jeans or trainers are allowed in school.

Footwear

Footwear should be sensible and comfortable – the children must be able to put them on without adult assistance (laces only if they can tie their own). Open toed sandals can be worn in the summer. Knee high fashion boots are not acceptable for daily wear. Big boots (e.g. knee high, moon or wellies) should not be worn all day – please send in a change of shoes if wearing these to journey to school.

Jewellery

We discourage children from wearing jewellery for health and safety reasons particularly in the playground and during PE. If your child has pierced ears, small stud earring are suitable. Bangles, bracelets, rings and necklaces are not appropriate and should not be worn. Please can you ensure your child can remove studs for PE.

Hair

Long hair should be securely tied back in order to avoid accidents on apparatus and reduce the transmission of head lice.
We discourage ‘fashion’ hair styles involving ornate shaving as these are inappropriate in an infant school. These hairstyles will often make the child feel very uncomfortable as it draws unwelcome attention from their classmates and peers.

Book bags

In order to take books home, your child requires a suitable bag. School supply designated “Book Bags” that are clearly marked with the school name and have a label for your child’s name that fit nicely into their drawers. They are sturdy and can be carried across the shoulder/body and have a reflective strip on them.

All items of school clothing, including PE Kit, should be clearly marked with the child’s name so that lost items can be returned to their owner. Please mark them where the children can see their name to ensure they know which one is theirs!
